On
the last Friday of Lent Term Homerton Rugby finally tasted
some success in the inter-collegiate Sevens. Missing four
first team players, including Captain Rothwell and being
drawn in a group of death with 1st Division Jesus and Catz
as well as the combined force of Kings and Clare, the omens
were not good. Coming the night after the Lepricorn bop
meant this was always going to be a dodgy affair, and sure
enough the effects were felt as Kellaway vomitted before
the first game which we promptly lost 24-12 to Catz. Hollands
then got in on the act with his own blend of yak. Things
were not looking good as we prepared to challenge a team
who finished 3rd in the 1st Division. However, Homerton
played the game of their lives blitzing Jesus 36-12 thanks
to some mesmeric running from JP, ridiculous gas from the
new found rugby player Cleaves and excellent team work and
spirit. This result sent shockwaves round the tournament.
Had Homerton really beaten Jesus? Yup, thrashed them too!
Our last game of the group was against Kings and Clare,
and at half time we were down 12-0 thanks to some sloppy
play and a bit of a hangover from our remarkable success
against Jesus. JP rallied the troops and the second half
was a different story as Homerton stormed back to win 19-12
with a last gasp try from Homerton’s first ever rugby
Captain Hollands. Homerton had exceeded all expectations
and managed to reach the quarter-finals of the main competition
for the first time in its History. Here is where the story
ends sadly, as despite a gutsy and intelligent display,
Homerton could not compete with the sheer pace and power
of a Selwyn side who had several Blues squad players and
went onto reach the final. Nevertheless this was a fantastic
achievement and awesome fun. Bring on next year, and under
the new leadership of JP, the future’s bright, the
future’s orange…
